A construction takeoff (or quantity takeoff) is the process of measuring and listing all materials needed for a project from blueprints and plans. It includes quantities, dimensions, and types of materials. The takeoff feeds into the estimate where costs are applied to each quantity.
Start with the foundation and work up: measure concrete quantities, then framing lumber, sheathing, roofing, siding, insulation, drywall, flooring, and finishes. Use a digital takeoff tool or scale ruler on printed plans. Always add waste factors (5-15% depending on material).
